What I’m doing:

I’m the content editor at ABC 17 News/ KMIZ in Columbia, Missouri. The job is a compilation of the tasks of a typical assignment editor (keeping track of newsworthy events, assigning reporters, following up on stories, etc.) and a digital content producer. I report on stories and often write the web copy for our website as well as manage livestreams and other digital content.

In addition to my full-time job, I’ve got a couple of side gigs. I do some freelance writing for Inside Columbia Magazine and am also an adjunct professor in journalism at the University of Missouri.

Past:

I graduated  with a masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in May 2018. While there, I was managing editor, then editor in chief at Vox Magazine, a weekly city arts and culture magazine in Columbia with a circulation of 10,000.

My duties there encompassed every aspect of the weekly publication. Namely, I kept an eye on everything going on at the magazine. I also oversaw print production and edited every story we printed. I got to have my hands in all departments, which is something I love. To view some of the work I help workshop and edit, click here

I graduated from West Virginia University in May 2016 with a BS in print Journalism with a minor in religious studies and a BMDS with minors in environmental economics, political science, and philosophy — Try explaining that one to your great aunt at the Thanksgiving table. I also spent a semester in Cork, Ireland, where I studied and received a certificate in Irish Politics.

I spent my four undergraduate years working my way up at The Daily Athenaeum, WVU’s independent student newspaper. Throughout my time there, I held the positions of staff writer, associate city editor, copy editor and editor in chief. This was no ordinary resume-fluff job. As editor in chief, I spent roughly 30 hours per week in the office and another five hours per week doing out-of-office work. For this position, I was required to have an in-depth knowledge of AP style and libel law, and I edited every story and photo published in the 10-page daily paper for style and content (all without an adviser).
